WAHA's Potluck & Election this Sunday, plus two Wednesday Evening Events!

>

1). WAHA ELECTION MEETING AND POTLUCK

Sunday, April 26, 2 to 5 p.m.
1314 West 25th Street (University Park)

WAHA is looking for a few good men and women. Our annual Board of Directors election is slated for April 26. WAHA currently has a 15-member board, and one-third of these positions are up for election each three years, on a rotating basis. At the meeting, candidates will present themselves to the membership for your vote.

The meeting and election will be held at Philippe Soler's beautifully restored 1890 Queen Anne Victorian, which was relocated to West Adams in 1982 from its original location at 1116 Ingraham Street. Please join us for a tour of the house and the good fellowship of West Adams neighbors and friends.

This is a Potluck! Please bring a dish, based on the following (suggested) breakdown:
Last name
> A-E Appetizer or salad
> F-J Vegetable side dish
> K-O Potato or pasta side dish
> P-T Main dish
> U-Z Dessert

This breakdown in only meant as a guide to assist our friends and members, and to attempt to round out the selection of food items. WAHA will be providing a main course and libations.

2). CULTURAL HERITAGE ORDINANCE MEETING @ MacGOWAN MANSION

Wednesday, April 22
6:30-8:30 p.m.
Dr. Grandville MacGowan Mansion, 3726 W. Adams Blvd. (between Crenshaw Boulevard and Arlington Avenue)

The City Planning Commission's consideration of amendments to the Cultural Heritage Ordinance, originally scheduled for March 12, has been continued to the Commission's meeting of May 14. The Office of Historic Resources is organizing two additional public workshops on the ordinance for Historic-Cultural Monument property owners, prior to the Commission hearing. One workshop, for owners of single-family homes, will be held this Wednesday, April 22, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Dr. Grandville MacGowan Mansion, Historic-Cultural Monument #479, 3726 W. Adams Blvd. (between Crenshaw Boulevard and Arlington Avenue, east of 8th Avenue).

If you haven't had a chance to see this grand mansion, the workshop is an excellent opportunity for you to take a peek, at least, of its expansive first floor. (The residence has undergone a four-year restoration). We hope to see many WAHA members at the meeting - even if you don't own an HCM (yet!). Learn how the revised ordinance changes - and does not change - the current regulations. WAHA is encouraging its members to nominate their own homes, when eligible, as HCMs, so this is a good chance to learn about the ordinance.

A second workshop, for owners of commercial, industrial, and multi-family buildings, will be held on Friday, April 24, 10:00 a.m. to noon, at Los Angeles City Hall, Historic-Cultural Monument #150, 200 N. Spring St., Rm. 1060.

3). NOT SINGING THE BLUES

Wednesday, April 22
7-9 p.m.
Cafe Club Fais Do Do, 5257 West Adams Blvd (just west of Redondo, which is west of La Brea)

Most of you are familiar with Mitzi March Mogul's work in historic preservation, but there is a whole other aspect of her life that may surprise you: that of singer/songwriter. On Wednesday night she'll be playing at Cafe Club Fais Do Do (itself a WAHA member), so perhaps some West Adams friends and neighbors may want to come out to hear her try out material in preparation for recording. Mitzi notes: "I'd appreciate a friendly audience! I know it's a "school night" but it won't run late -- only 7-9 p.m. So come on out, have a bite to eat or just a glass of wine. I think there's a $5 cover (doesn't go to the artist!)"

4). SUBMIT YOUR NEWS

We welcome your contributions to the WAHA E-News and West Adams Heritage Association's monthly publication, "West Adams Matters." Please understand that we do have deadlines. Material for the print newsletter should be submitted no later than the 1st of the prior month (i.e.: April 1 for the May issue). If your event is scheduled for early in a month, we suggest you request coverage for the prior month (i.e.: May issue for a June 3 event), because it's entirely possible that not all of our members will have received their newsletter by then (we do try hard.) We reserve the right to edit submitted material. For the WAHA E-News, we prefer to only send it out once or twice a month. Please don't wait until two days before an event to let us know about it. It may not be sent out.

EXCEPTION
If you suddenly hear of an important city hearing or other public meeting that is important to West Adams, we will endeavor to send out a special bulletin.

Submit your material to Laura Meyers, editor, lauramink@aol.com.
