Last Call for WAHA's Living History Tour, Plant a Tree, and More!

1). A MILLION TREES IN L.A.
Saturday, September 30 10:00 am to 2:00 pm CD 10 District Office, 1819 South Western Ave. (enter from rear on Manhattan Place)

The Mayor's Million Trees LA program launches this Saturday with tree "adoptions" at 15 sites citywide, including the CD10 District office parking lot in the heart of West Adams. Thousands of tree seedlings and five gallon trees will be distributed to residents who pledge to plant and care for them. Pick up a tree, plant it, and make it count towards the one million tree goal by logging on to www.milliontreesla.org or by calling 3-1-1. Everyone is invited -- please pass this along to your neighbors and friends. Trees will be distributed until the last one is gone. First come, first served - one tree per family. 2). LAST CALL! LIVING HISTORY TOUR 2006 AT ANGELUS ROSEDALE CEMETERY
Saturday, September 30

We have a few tickets left for WAHA's annual Living History Tour at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery. The cemetery, one of Los Angeles' oldest, is the final resting place for many of the city's earliest movers and shakers. This tour features actor portrayals, graveside, of some of the individuals buried at the cemetery.

This year, you will have the opportunity to meet:
*Jonathan Trumbull Warner, an early California rancher
* Laurence Prudhont, a wireless operator and shipwreck victim
* John James Neimore, publisher of The Eagle newspaper
* A. Churchill Harvey Elder, a victim of the L.A. Times bombing
* Louise Peete, a serial murderess

Tickets are by advance reservation only -- No walk-ins.

3). ANTIQUE AND COLLECTIBLE SALE
Saturday, October 7 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Heritage Square Museum, 3800 Homer Street ( Los Angeles - Highland Park area)

Heritage Square Museum's Antique and Collectible Sale offers one-of-a-kind antique furniture, ephemera, hardware, books, late 19th and Early 20th century collectables, office equipment, building materials, vintage appliances, 78" records, and other unique items from the Museum's collections. Admission charge is $5 for ages 6 to 106. All proceeds from the sale go to Heritage Square Museum's Operational Fund.

4). DOHENY MANSION TOURS
Saturday, October 14 9:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Mt. Saint Mary's College, 10 Chester Place ( University Park)

During public tours of the historic Doheny Mansion at Mount St. Mary's College near downtown Los Angeles, visitors learn the history of this unique mansion, the illustrious Doheny family, and the lifestyles of rich and famous Angelenos from more than 100 years ago. The Gothic Renaissance-style Victorian mansion was designed by Theodore Augustus Eisen and Sumner P. Hunt in 1898. It was home to the Doheny family for almost 60 years. Frequently remodeled by Edward L. and Carrie Estelle Doheny, the mansion boasts the famous Pompeian Room with iridescent Tiffany glass dome and imported Siena marble. Tours include the first floor of the mansion and surrounding grounds. The cost is $25 per person; proceeds benefit the mansion's preservation. 5). CRAFTSMAN WEEKEND
Friday, October 20 to Sunday, October 22 Pasadena area venues

Pasadena Heritage, a nonprofit preservation organization, will present its annual Craftsman Weekend on October 20-22. Craftsman Weekend reaches an important milestone this year, celebrating the 15th anniversary of the largest and most comprehensive salute to the Arts & Crafts Movement in the Western United States.

The Weekend's offerings will include a tour of significant Craftsman-era houses, exhibits by antique dealers specializing in the Arts & Crafts Movement and modern craftsmen specializing in the period style, and a lecture series by nationally prominent Craftsman Movement experts.

6). JAZZ WITH THE STARS
Saturday, October 21 7 p.m. (reception), 8 p.m. (performance begins) Nate Holden Performing Arts Center, 4718 West Washington Blvd.

The Lafayette Square Association annual fundraising gala, "Jazz with the Stars," presents Ronnie Laws & Friends in the event's new home, the beautiful, state-of-the-art Nate Holden Performing Arts Center. Ronald "Ronnie" Laws is an American jazz, blues and funk musician. In 1972, Laws joined the fledgling group Earth, Wind & Fire, playing saxophone and flute on their album "Last Days And Time." In 1976, he began his solo career with the album "Pressure Sensitive." His most famous instrumental song, "Always There," became an instant jazz-funk classic, covered by numerous artists.

West Adams Heritage Association has lots and LOTS of activities on its calendar over the next few months. We'll be calling for volunteers for some of these events, and hope you will also plan to attend some or all of these activities, so please DO mark your own calendars now.

* WAHA Evening Stroll in Wilshire Park, Wednesday, October 25, 5 to 7 p.m. - Discover another historic pocket adjacent to West Adams

* WAHA's Frightful Halloween Fest, Sunday, October 29, 3 to 5 p.m. - Fun for all your little ghosts and goblins!

* Demonstration Day, Saturday, November 18 - hands-on restoration techniques galore! This date is TENTATIVE. Details are still being arranged.

8). SUBMIT YOUR NEWS

We welcome your contributions to the WAHA E-News and West Adams Heritage Association's monthly publication, "West Adams Matters." Please understand that we do have deadlines. Material for the print newsletter should be submitted no later than the 1st of the prior month (i.e.: April 1 for the May issue). If your event is scheduled for early in a month, we suggest you request coverage for the prior month (i.e.: May issue for a June 3 event), because it's entirely possible that not all of our members will have received their newsletter by then (we do try hard…). We reserve the right to edit submitted material. For the WAHA E-News, we prefer to only send it out once or twice a month, circa the 5th and the 20th. Please don't wait until two days before an event to let us know about it. It may not be sent out. EXCEPTION: If you suddenly hear of an important city hearing or other public meeting that is important to West Adams, we will endeavor to send out a special bulletin.
