Family Fun, Afternoon Tea, Tree Care and More!

By Laura Meyers

1). TREE CARE IN ARLINGTON HEIGHTS
Saturday, July 15 9 a.m. to Noon Meet at 2125 Fourth Avenue (south of Washington Boulevard)

It's time for Tree Care on Fourth Avenue! There are 13 seven-year-old Camphors, and a whole bunch of young Cassia trees along Washington Blvd. that need our help. We will weed, mulch, water and prune AND we teach as we go so you don't need to know how to do any of these things in advance.

Come have fun, meet the neighbors and learn what young city trees need. Family friendly site! (Kids love tree care-earthworms, mulch, donuts-yum!)

It will be HOT!

Be kind to yourself‹dress in light colors (no black or navy). Bring a hat (wicker, straw, cotton-- one with a rim). Bring sunblock. Bring plenty of water.

For more information, contact Jennifer Scott-Lifland, TreePeople Tree Care manager and certified arborist, 818-623-4841 or jlifland@treepeople.org.

2). GOOD, OLD-FASHIONED FAMILY FUN AT HERITAGE SQUARE
Sunday, July 16 12 to 5 p.m. Heritage Square Museum, 3800 Homer Street ( Highland Park area)

Take the family on a journey through time to the Los Angeles of yesteryear at Heritage Square's Annual Family Fun Day and Ice Cream Social.

Explore the Square's completely and partially restored Victorian buildings with costumed tour guides. Share the fun of history with your family and learn what Los Angeles was like before freeways, cell-phones, and fast food. Invoke genteel family competition with a game of croquet, hoops, or marbles. Or, learn how to make toys that don't require batteries or a joy-stick!

Learn how to make butter or meet a historical figure from the past as re-enactment and living history groups Code of the West and the Western Educators, Shooters and Troopers (WEST) perform throughout the day. This beautifully landscaped Victorian "neighborhood" is the perfect spot to enjoy a picnic lunch or enjoy a cold ice cream sandwich on a hot summer day.

Guided tours between 12-3 p.m.

Special one-day admission prices are $8.00 for adults, $5.00 for seniors (65 and over), and $3.00 for children (6 to 11). Children 6 and under are free.

Heritage Square Museum is located at the Avenue 43 exit of the Pasadena (110) Freeway, 3 miles north of Downtown. For information, please call (323) 225-2700 or visit www.heritagesquare.org.

4). LOS ANGELES TECHNOLOGY CENTER COMMUNITY ROUNDTABLE/ADVISORY MEETING
Thursday, July 20 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (brunch will be provided) LA Technology Center, 3721 West Washington Blvd. (located on Washington Boulevard between Crenshaw and Arlington)

Neighbors are invited to attend the 2006 Community Advisory Roundtable for LA technology center. The purpose of this activity is to bring together local businesses, residents, elected officials, and community organizations to provide a forum for input and create an action plan to meet the needs of a rapidly changing school community.

Los Angeles Technology Center is one of the community's only stand-alone public adult educational facilities. We are 5 miles from downtown Los Angeles, which is experiencing a period of unprecedented growth. LATC seeks to respond to issues arising in the LA workforce. A recent report identified by the City of Los Angeles, Workforce Investment Board, "One Out of Five," cites 25,000 teens (16-19 years old) are not attending school nor are in the workforce.

LATC seeks to work with you, and other community partners, to inform the community about the educational opportunities available here. Top growth occupations for Los Angeles County include Medical Assistant, Construction worker and Nursing Assistants, all of which are offered at LATC. Students also seeking to earn a high school diploma, pass the GED exam, learn English as a second language or take a US Citizenship preparation course will find them here as well.

Parking is available in the student lot on the corner of 8th Avenue and Washington Blvd.

If you can attend, please reply (RSVP) to Ryan Whetstone @ 323-732-0153 x205, Kim Campbell at x204, or via e-mail to ryan.whetstone@lausd.net.

5). EXPOSITION/UNIVERSITY PARK CAC ELECTIONS

Please mark your calendars for the upcoming elections of a new advisory committee that will represent the community's varied interests to the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) staff and Board. To vote, you must live in, own property in, be the designated representive of a business in, or the designated representative of an organization in the boundaries of the former " Hoover" (now renamed Exposition/University Park) Project Area, which is roughly bounded by Adams on the north, Vermont on the west, 42nd on the south and the 110 freeway on the east, with some areas (primarily, the North University Park Specific Plan area) not included.

For more information, contact Jennifer Barrera at 323-290-2800.

6). SUBMIT YOUR NEWS

We welcome your contributions to the WAHA E-News and West Adams Heritage Association's monthly publication, "West Adams Matters." Please understand that we do have deadlines. Material for the print newsletter should be submitted no later than the 1st of the prior month (i.e.: April 1 for the May issue). If your event is scheduled for early in a month, we suggest you request coverage for the prior month (i.e.: May issue for a June 3 event), because it's entirely possible that not all of our members will have received their newsletter by then (we do try hard…). We reserve the right to edit submitted material. For the WAHA E-News, we prefer to only send it out once or twice a month, circa the 5th and the 20th. Please don't wait until two days before an event to let us know about it. It may not be sent out.

EXCEPTION: If you suddenly hear of an important city hearing or other public meeting that is important to West Adams, we will endeavor to send out a special bulletin.

Submit your material to Laura Meyers, editor, lauramink@aol.com.
