Another Sucessful Holiday Tour!
WAHA’s Holiday Progressive Dinner Tour set to explore a new neighborhood!
New residents are flocking to what was originally called the C.V. Hall Tract, located between Western and Normandie Avenues, making it one of the most vital neighborhoods in the Historic West Adams District. For 29 years now, WAHA has been sharing a unique holiday tradition by blending a historic architecture tour with a progressive dinner party. Guests will enjoy a different course at each of the houses along the tour’s route.
This gem of a neighborhood has been hiding in plain sight, often over shadowed by some of it’s more well known neighbors: Van Buren Place to the east; Jefferson Park to the west, and West Adams Heights just north of Adams. The earliest homes built south of Adams were primarily Queen Anne cottages, a few of which still exist. By the turn of the century, the housing styles had evolved to the American Foursquare, Arts & Crafts and Craftsman residences. Almost two dozen homes in this neighborhood were designed by noted architect, Frank M. Tyler. The area is also dotted with houses designed by J.A. Mathis and W.R. Ziegler.
While Charles Victor Hall (shown left) is the man most responsible for the initial development of the area located just southeast of the intersection of Adams and Western, it was actually his mother Eliza Jane Hall and older sister Mary Hall who took the first steps. Taking advantage of the Homestead Act of 1862 (which awarded settlers with free land) they applied for and were granted two 160-acre parcels. Originally recorded as “Adams Street Homestead Tract #2” and the “Mary Moore Tract,” these parcels stretched from what is today Western Avenue east to Normandie, and from Adams Boulevard north to Washington.
In the 1950’s this area was severed from its northern reaches by the Santa Monica Freeway. Today, however, young professionals and families are actively renewing this area into a vital neighborhood known as the West Adams Neighborhood Association (WANA).
We hope you’ll join us as we launch the Holiday Season in our traditional WAHA style!
